Blog Action Day 2009: Climate Change

by Nussaïbah Raja - October 15th, 2009

Climate Change: The theme for this year’s Blog Action Day, barely a surprise since this issue has been gracing the headlines for, god knows, how much time now, hooting warnings about the ‘mere’ two degrees that can change our lives forever and that most of us don’t even care about. To tell you the truth, it is hard to care, with the recession hitting and your money being more important that your planet. Humans have this tendency to care more about materialistic matters rather than devoting themselves to a cause they can barely understand.

Climate Change, the hot topic selling the newspapers, the main focus of scientists and one of the issues we manage to hide deep in the back of our mind. True enough, who can say that he thinks about climate change or any other environmental issue everyday, trying to find a solution to this global problem. Even I can’t say that, though sometimes I do feel like an environmental freak. Why, though? It’s because we feel that we, by ourselves, do not have the power to change the whole world. Of course, we don’t. What can one single person, among the 6.791 billion ones forming the world’s whole population, do. Continue reading →

Arcadia: A trip to the imaginary

by Nussaïbah Raja - August 16th, 2009

I have been struggling to write this post for more a day now; since a few days now, the blogosphere counts a new blog among its vast directory of blogs and I had given myself this huge task of introducing it… to the world. I kept wondering whether to go with the informative tone or the poetic one, filled with the literary passion that brought us friends together to create Arcadia.

The Arcadian Blog is a blog dedicated to fictitious writing, a secret haven for all these dormant writers to come and unleash their creativity. It seems to be a crazy project, but with a bunch of crazy young kids, nothing is impossible, or so, we would like to think. While we have many ideas for this little creation of ours, we have decided to start with the one which brought this whole project alive: The Fictitious Writing Activity (FWA). Basically, it’s an activity where write the opening of a story and someone else will take over to continue and complete it. Both writers have complete freedom as to what do write, as long as it’s coherent.

I’d suggest heading over to the blog for more information, it would certainly be better than the pitiful explanation I’m trying to write. The guidelines can be found here, and you can send us an email if you want to sign up. The FWA is in no means a contest, there is no winner or loser. It’s just a fun activity to bring Fiction Lovers together.

Come unleash your creativity at Arcadia. We’ll be waiting…

A Hamster Tale

by Nussaïbah Raja - August 5th, 2009

I woke up to the feeling that everything was moving beneath me. My first thoughts were of panic and horror as I went through the worst possible scenarios as to why my home was shaking as it was. An earthquake was out of question, though back in a corner on my mind, my little brain was working hard to try and remember my earthquake survival lessons my father gave me when I was little. I took a deep breath and tried to clear my head, telling myself that this was just a nightmare, but even that seemed impossible; seconds ago, I had been dreaming of that beautiful girl again, the one I saw long ago in my old home and from who I was cruelly separated by those heartless humans who are now supposed to be my masters.

As I lamented silently in my corner, I felt three pairs of eyes on me, watching my every movement. I smelled the sweet scent of my unexpected visitors, and suddenly, life wasn’t so bad after all; females were all around me AND at the same time, interested in me. I rarely had female company and the change was welcome. Of course, there is my ‘master’, but I doubt I’ll ever be able to see her in any other way than that of the person because of whom I was separated from loved ones. Anyway, the two other faces were new to me and they didn’t really seem that mean.
But little did I know of the whimsical nature of the fair sex for my experience was only limited to my sisters and their friends who had never been that interested in me. Some experience wouldn’t hurt, I thought to myself as I tried to remember the tips my older brothers gave me. Continue reading →

A Neighbourhood Story

by sayuka - July 20th, 2009

Once upon a time, in a faraway neighbourhood, there lived an evil witch. The witch had proclaimed herself the Mistress and Ruler of everything in a 100m (or was it a kilometer) radius of her Castle. Her children having left home and boredom of old age kicking in, she only had for hobby to nose around in her “subjects” family and personal matters, reveling in creating rifts between members of a same family or discord within the whole community. However, the evil hag was not satisfied! There existed a small household in the county that refused to yield to the nosiness of the witch, going about their everyday-life peacefully and quietly.

Unite For Hunger And Hope

by Nussaïbah Raja - April 29th, 2009

One man’s gain is equal to another man’s loss.

This might be one of the oldest theories in Economics; there can never be two winners, one always has to lose. However, it’s unbelievable how the contrary cannot be applied to all the cases. Someone’s loss might result in another’s loss or gain; it’s a 50-50 risk that one might have to take sometimes. While most economists seek for a balance in such an imperfect world, one cannot help but feel the imbalance that threatens to attach itself to the future generations; the widening gap between prosperous countries and the poverty-stricken others being the most noticeable of all.

What comes to mind when one think about the gloomy destinies of poor countries? Hunger: they are flagged with that one word, the picture of several skinny children coming to mind, and staying what they are, a picture… soon to be discarded for the frivolous and materialistic desires that we harbour and which might not be important. How many times have we thought of the plight of these dying nations, then instantly forgotten about it all because “we had better things to do”? Continue reading →

Ode to My Tainted Dreams

by Nussaïbah Raja - April 26th, 2009

I just realised it was the 26th of April; I’m a bit slow concerning dates, which is why I miss birthdays and which is why I missed the 2nd anniversary of us starting a blog. 21th of April 2007, we were young (not that we are THAT old now), frustrated, had a thing against the whole world and had lots of times on our hands. Not much has changed, except we are much more subtle now… maybe? Well, to mark this year’s (belated) anniversary, I thought I’d post something the blog inspired me to write…

Silence! These voices jingling in my head;
Playing that infamous melody as they do,
My eyes cannot see, but alas, I do hear.
It’s all in the mind some say, but then…
Why do I hear them, as if close they are?

Memories of a night, forever bonded to him…

by Nussaïbah Raja - April 8th, 2009

I just remembered this poem, and thought I simply had to post it. I had already posted in on the old blog, but it was so long ago, 2007. It’s one of my best, if not the very best. I still remember writing it, it was the only one who was actually drafted before being written, the words carefully chosen to make it perfect. Maybe I should take that much time on the others as well…

“The night that the stars would hide,
and upon this veil, the moon will abide;
this time will make it’s way,
as your paths become a crossway,
his eyes, will you remember
as dark as the devil’s anger.”

Those very words of the prophetess,
presented for me such absurdness.
Yet this fateful night declared itself,
sooner than I could prepare myself,
Some night blessed by Him,
For even He has waited for this glim.

Forbidden Love

by Nussaïbah Raja - November 13th, 2007

Songshots, a blog friend calls it. A mixture of song fics and oneshots (fics as well). I tried to write one and this is what it gave… Waiting for you – to give a fair judgement… :-)

About the song…

Title: Shadow of Love

Lyrics: OLIVIA & Chazne

Vocals: OLIVIA inspi’ REIRA (TRAPNEST)

Compostion: OLIVIA & rui

The rings of vows
Our red thread
Is invisible now
There are no promises, either, but-

A long time ago, their destinies had crossed. An interlaced fate it was and they had accepted it. But now, in that same sacred book was written that their time of separation had come. The thread of destiny holding them together, it seemed, it had to let go of them. Nothing could bind them together again, for the gods had decided otherwise. They had voiced out their decisions and nobody had the courage to defy them, except-

Her second chance…

by Nussaïbah Raja - November 11th, 2007

She found herself at the beach, in a one piece swimming suit laying on the soft sand. How she had landed there, she had absolutely no idea, and somehow she didn’t care. From far, she could see her friends, laughing and enjoying themselves in the water. It had been very long ever since she had some fun and it was certainly time for now to put the past behind her and move on. She sighed, that was gonna be difficult, but she had too. She didn’t have the right to ruin her entire life just because of her own memories. Now, from where had this thought just come from?

Giving her a little tap on the head, she quickly casted these memories away. She didn’t know why she was here but it had a reason. She just had to stop her mind from working and everything’s would be alright. She wouldn’t have to go over the past again, nor cry these tears again. A new life was waiting for her and she didn’t want to miss it. She was still young; there wasn’t anything that she couldn’t do. Or maybe there was. Her cooking was awful; she would have to work on that later. For now, only she mattered.

She stood up, her new resolution jingling in her head. She was ready, to grab the world in her hands. She made way towards her friends and found Kaili waving at her. She waved back, her lips crooking into a smile and those turquoise eyes gleaming. It felt good, to be free from the ghosts of the past, she thought. She couldn’t remember the last time she had smiled but it sure felt good. She continued walking until the cold water kissed her feet. A shiver ran down her spine. Eyes closed, she captured this instant, knowing it would be long until that feeling came to her again.

“You joining us?”

And she found it…

by Nussaïbah Raja - October 25th, 2007

She lay down on her bed, arms spread, eyes closed. The idea seemed less appealing to her now. The idea of going out with him. So many dreams had she had about this. Wonderful ones of course, but now, she would have preferred if it only remained a dream. Earphones in her ears but she paid no attention to the music playing. It was just here to keep her from hearing the noise from outside.

She felt her cell phone’s vibration.

“1 missed call”

A second would soon follow if she didn’t show any signs of being alive. It was their secret language. One missed call and the other should call back.

She sighed. She didn’t want to. All she wanted right now was enjoy the peaceful moment she was having to herself. But she guessed she ‘should’ call him back now. It all turned out into an obligation now, rather than some wish or desire. Once upon a time, she had felt this urge to hear his voice constantly. She could practically not live without him, but now, all her feelings had turned icy cold.

“I’ll call you later. I’m busy right now.” She sent him this innocent little message but so many reasons and feelings hid behind it. Lies, were they her last option? She should end things up but she knew he would be devastated… or… would he? Continue reading →
