Sunday 26th April 2009

by Nussaïbah Raja

I just realised it was the 26th of April; I’m a bit slow concerning dates, which is why I miss birthdays and which is why I missed the 2nd anniversary of us starting a blog. 21th of April 2007, we were young (not that we are THAT old now), frustrated, had a thing against the whole world and had lots of times on our hands. Not much has changed, except we are much more subtle now… maybe? Well, to mark this year’s (belated) anniversary, I thought I’d post something the blog inspired me to write…

Silence! These voices jingling in my head;
Playing that infamous melody as they do,
My eyes cannot see, but alas, I do hear.
It’s all in the mind some say, but then…
Why do I hear them, as if close they are?

Little by little, I get adjusted to that sight;
The deepness of darkness, or is it just…
Just an illusion, as they all say… Mirage.
Is it really all in the mind? Then why?
Lies. Reality this can all be, will it?

Hear! That jingle again! The one that…
No, you can’t hear it, can you? I do.
It’s calling for it, or him. I do not know.
That beautiful creature. I do see now.
She’s the source of all emotions. Mine.

Upon that day, I call upon my star.
My birth it protected, my death it will.
Star of Fate, hear me as I speak.
Lend me your light, as you had once.
I might fight, they say. I know I will.

Cries piercing through the night. Howls.
Come to me, ordinary beast you are.
I heard it. She knew I did. I hear it again.
She calls to me, like some ocean nymph.
Crimson eyes, but pure black hair.

Is that a laugh? I might have to bear.
She seeks my blood, I seek hers.
Good or evil, none we might be.
Fate’s glory came at last, or did it really?
It is the end, at the very least, for me.

Do not mind me. I didn’t. For others.
Such things I was told, they held true.
A jingle you will now hear. I feel it.
Don’t you understand? It’s your turn.
To write the ode to your tainted dreams.

    OMG OMG OMG!!! I strangely don’t remember this one, but I so love it! You gripped the reader’s attention right from the start. The uses of the jingle and the narrator’s response to it create an image of realism, right from the first stanza. It’s like I’m drawn, against or with my consent, into the dark world your words weave around me. As eerie as the “creature” might be made out to be, one cannot avert his eyes, for the power of that “creature” comes alive with your clever use of words. You achieved to create a world using what many would discard as inanimate words. For me, it’s a true reflection of your soul at the time you had the urge to create our bloggie! It surely fits the force that pushed you into creating “Ode”.

    A true masterpiece, I’d say… One that gripped me so strongly and shook my core even… So Happy Birthday, dear Ode!
